Filing Papers & Signature Requirements for Candidacy

Each candidate must file an affidavit of candidacy and nomination petitions with the county auditor for City Elections. For School Elections each candidate must file an affidavit of candidacy and nomination petitions with the school secretary or community college board secretary. The affidavit of candidacy and nomination petitions must be filed together or they will be rejected.

Central Community School District: 25 signatures from district
Clayton Ridge Community School District: 37 signatures from district
MFL MarMac Community School District: 37 signatures from district
Starmont Community School District: 24 signatures from district

It is always wise to file more than the minimum number of signatures. Candidates may begin collecting signatures at any time. However, the signers must still be eligible electors when the papers are filed in order for the signatures to count. Nomination papers must be filed during the filing period. The filing period begins Monday, July 10, 2017 and ends Thursday, August 3, 2017.

City Election

The filing period differs depending on whether or not a city has primary provisions.  If a city with primary provisions has one more than double the number of candidates, a primary election must be held to limit the number of candidates that will be listed on the ballot November 7, 2017.  If such an election is needed it will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. The filing period for cities with primary provisions begins Monday, August 14, 2017 and ends at 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2017.  The filing period for cities without primary provisions begins Monday, August 28, 2017 and ends at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2017.  

City Signature Requirements

It is always wise to file more than the minimum number of signatures. Candidates may begin collecting signatures at any time. However, the signers must still be eligible electors when the papers are filed in order for the signatures to count. 10 signatures are needed for all cities with the exception of Clayton, Elkport, and Osterdock where 5 signatures are needed.

Nomination papers should be filed with the County Auditor not with the City Clerk. Public measures need to be brought to the Auditor's Office by the City Clerk no later than 5 p.m. on the close of filing.
